Tiaki Rangatira - Elder abuse response services
Tiaki Rangatira is guided by mātāpono of manaakitanga (care and respect), whanaungatanga (connection and relationships), and tino rangatiratanga (self-determination). At the heart of this kāinga is a deep commitment to uplifting the dignity, wellbeing, and safety of kaumātua and older people.
Our Commitment
We offer a welcoming, trusted space where all kaumātua, their whānau, and their communities are heard and respected, no matter their background or whakapapa.
Tiaki Rangatira responds quickly and compassionately to any kaumātua, older person experiencing, or at risk of, harm or neglect.
Guided by our mātāpono, we walk alongside kaumātua and whānau to uphold mana, strengthen whānau, and empower kaumātua to live safely, confidently, and of their choosing.
What We Do
We ensure kaumātua voices and decision are respected and that kaumātua and whānau are the experts about their own lives.
Link kaumātua and whānau to local services, promoting resilience and belonging.
When abuse or neglect is present or suspected, we act swiftly to uphold safety, prevent re-victimisation, and provide ongoing guidance and advocacy.
We build strong partnerships with iwi, community groups, government, and non-government agencies, to deliver holistic support shaped by the unique needs of each kaumātua.
He Korowai Manaaki
Tiaki Rangatira is a korowai – a mantle of care – wrapping kaumātua and whānau in support, advocacy, and aroha. Our vision is a community where every kaumātua is safe, respected, and valued at every stage of life.
Kete Tiaki
Kete Tiaki is a prevention and response toolkit designed to uphold the safety, dignity, and well-being of kaumātua (older people) and whānau. It will support those working with kaumātua to recognise and respond to abuse in a way that maintains mana and empowers both individuals and communities.
The toolkit was developed by Te Ahi Kaa Indigenous Solutions, with input from local experts and kaumātua, aiming to ensure that all kaumātua and whānau are safe, valued, and treated with respect.
