Haerenga Motuhake

Haerenga Motuhake is a collective kaupapa Māori designed solution created through the ACC Kaupapa Māori Health Services team. Haerenga Motuhake supports and respects the mana and independence of kiritaki (clients) and their whānau who have experienced sexual violence. It focuses on their overall oranga in a way they determine.

The name ‘Haerenga Motuhake’ means ‘self-determined journey’ and reflects the idea that whānau should have control over their oranga.

Ngā Āhuatanga Matua

  • Haerenga Motuhake places whānau at the centre, supporting them to lead and decide on their own recovery and healing process.

  • Mātauranga Māori is embedded in the programme, using Te Ao Māori perspectives that uphold mana, tapū, and acknowledge the diverse needs of communities.

  • Supports are woven together in a wraparound approach, likened to the korowai, with different whenu (strands) representing various interventions chosen by whānau.

  • Pathways within Haerenga Motuhake are available to those impacted by sexual violence, and future plans are underway to extend these supports to whānau affected by serious injury.

  • Currently, Te Ahi Kaa delivers the pathway for whānau experiencing sexual violence in Tāmaki Makaurau, and further updates on the serious injury initiative will be provided as they become available

How can you or your whānau participate?

  • Involvement is voluntary; kiritaki and whānau can access support whether or not they have made a formal claim with ACC.

  • Support is available to adults (aged 18+) living in the Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) region. For support for those under 18, options can be discussed by contacting the service.

  • Whānau do not need an ACC sensitive claim to participate and can access other services concurrently if they wish.
