Kia Piki te Ora
Kia Piki Te Ora is a kaupapa Māori suicide prevention and health promotion service that supports and uplifts individuals, whānau, and communities by delivering practical, culturally grounded, and community-led wellbeing solutions.
The service provides positive information, early intervention, and practical supports for suicide prevention rooted in mātauranga Māori and whānau-led approaches. It uses specially designed activities and Māori practices, including working in natural environments and integrating tikanga Māori, to strengthen mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing for all those affected.
Te Paerata - Our Framework
Te Paerata is the guiding framework for Te Ahi Kaa Kia Piki te Ora, placing whānau (family) at the centre of all practice and support. It is built on key mātāpono—whanaungatanga, whakapapa, mana motuhake, taiao, and kaitiakitanga.
Overview of the Framework
Whānau: Acknowledges that whānau-led practice is at the heart of Te Paerata, guiding all actions and support.
Whanaungatanga: Promotes strong relationships and connections within the community, making sure these bonds are nurtured and valued.
Whakapapa: Recognises the deep connections of Māori whānau to both physical and spiritual realms.
Mana Motuhake: Focuses on whānau self-determination, empowering families to lead their own wellbeing journeys.
Taiao: Ensures access to safe and supportive environments that reflect a Māori worldview.
Kaitiakitanga: Encourages protection and care across generations by using traditional values to conserve and safeguard wellbeing.
This framework grounds Te Ahi Kaa’s approach in Māori knowledge, ensuring supports are holistic, inclusive, and led by the needs and strengths of whānau.
